RESPONSE:

I do not remember doing any field work on, nor have I studied "sand gnats", but, I am quite sure lightly misting the area in the cool of the evening or early morning with Safe Solutions' Enzyme Cleaner with Peppermint on an as needed basis should safely solve your problem.  It is worth giving it a try.  Are they strong fliers?  If not, you could try sitting in the breeze of a fan.
